Traditions of Easter in Mallorca

Easter is a special time of the year in Mallorca, which invites you to connect with the culture and the most deeply rooted traditions on the island, which began centuries ago.

One of the most surprising aspects of this festivity is the dates on which it is celebrated. Depending on the year, the temporary range varies between March 22 and April 25. This great disparity is due to the fact that, since the third century, Easter is celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon of spring.

The weather also seems to fit the needs of the curious traveler. Spring raises the temperature a few degrees and makes it more pleasant to be outside, and the days of rain are reduced, so there is no excuse not to go out and enjoy the large number of events that take place. It is even possible to go to the beach to have one of the first swims of the year, taking advantage of the fact that at this time of year they are not very crowded.

One of the most characteristic and striking events are the processions commemorating the Passion of Christ, in which the different brotherhoods make their way of penance through the streets of the city, dressed in tunics and hoods in the shape of a cone, and carrying religious statues on their shoulders . Some of the most impressive take place on Holy Thursday, Holy Friday, Easter Sunday or Angel Sunday, and are very famous those of Palma, although they are repeated in many towns on the island.

Although it is tradition that the members of the brotherhoods deliver sweet "confits" to those who come to the streets to see the processions, when you think of Easter you can not forget his gastronomic side. A great variety of traditional recipes, sweet and salty, delight everyone during these days, and its preparation is already part of the family traditions of Mallorca.

Among the salty dishes you can find "cocarrois" and "panades". Although both have filling, the first only includes vegetables such as cauliflower or chard, seasoned with raisins and pine nuts, while in the second there is a greater variety: there are meat (lamb, chicken ...) with or without peas, and also fish.

As for sweets, the most prominent are the "robiols", stuffed also, but in this case with cottage cheese, cream, sweet pumpkin or any type of jam, and "crespells", cookies made with the same dough with funny shapes.

Although the dishes are the same, there are as many recipes as there are families in Mallorca, so it is always interesting to try different variations or new flavors.

Whatever your reason for coming to enjoy Easter in Mallorca is, at the Hotel Cosmopolitan Mallorca we have everything at your disposal to live an experience that you will want to repeat.
