The fiestas of Sant Joan in Mallorca

The most magical night of the year arrives, the night of Sant Joan.

As tradition dictates, next 23.06.2017 is celebrated the night of Sant Joan, the most magical night of the year. The beaches of Mallorca are filled with people who come to dinner and fulfill their wishes. A night where a series of rituals are staged that, according to popular legend, will protect and give luck all year long to those who perform them.

The night of Sant Joan is celebrated in many more points of Europe, although it is especially rooted in Spain, Portugal (Jonsok), Denmark (Sankthans), Sweden (Midsommar), Finland (Juhannus), Estonia (Jaanipäev) and the United Kingdom (Midsummer).

In Menorca there is a tradition that is celebrated from the fourteenth century in Ciudadela and throughout the summer, similar parties in other municipalities, whose main protagonist is the horse. The horsemen or caixers, dressed in black and white, go on their horses through the streets of the village, until once they are all collected and after the mass, the traditional jaleo is celebrated (not to be confused with flamenco singing and dancing). In the jaleo the caixers enter the town square and pass among the crowd demonstrating their skills and making the horses jump to the rhythm of the typical songs of these parties. The drink that is drunk at parties is the pomada, a mixture of Gin de Menorca with lemonade.

On Mallorca, Formentera and Ibiza bonfires are organized in the squares and there is no shortage of music and dances, which fill the congregation with joy. The magic hour is midnight, the time to join the ritual of purification by fire. According to tradition, something old or a paper where we have written everything we would like to change must be thrown at the stake. While burning in the flames, three jumps are followed in a row. It is also frequent in the beaches or coves to make bonfires and at twelve o’clock, three coins are thrown into the sea, each coin is a wish, once the coins have been thrown it is also a tradition to bathe at 12 o’clock.

Sant Joan is the patron saint of several villages in Mallorca such as Deià, Mancor de la Vall and Son Servera, which celebrate with the typical summer festivals.

The meeting point in Palma de Mallorca is the Parc de la Mar and Ses Voltes, where fire shows and music concerts are scheduled.

The ‘correfoc’ is one of the most massive activities of the night of Sant Joan in Palma and comes loaded with demons, gunpowder and pyrotechnics. The “Nit de Sant Joan” is one of the most rooted traditions in our city where the Parc de la Mar and the Cathedral look more spectacular than ever.

From the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Playa de Palma we wish you a magical Sant Joan night and a good summer!
