Essential Ports and Fishing Villages in Mallorca

Mallorca, with its over 3.600 square meters, is full of incredible ports and fishing villages. Fairytale houses, underground caves, amazing yachts moored in little ports. Harmonious contrasts that will make your holidays wonderful.

One of the geographic characteristics of Mallorca is the Sierra de Tramuntana, a mountain range that has the tallest mountains on the island. From this mountain range, what stands out are the cliffs and rocky coves, very different from the other sand beaches that you can find all over the island.

Mallorca is the sixth largest island in the Mediterranean.

The first stop we recommend you is Valldemossa, a little pearl in the Mediterranean. Narrow and steep, cobbled streets make this town such a special place that once was home for many years to several worldwide known celebrities. Its main attraction is the Cartuja de Valldemossa, a royal palace from the 15th century. In cell number four at this palace we can find memories from musician Frederic Chopin and writer George Stand’s stay between 1838-1839. There Chopin composed his Preludes Op. 28 and Stand wrote “A Winter in Mallorca.” Two relics that without doubt need to be seen in order to imagine how these celebrities spent their time in our island. Also, other writers like Rubén Darío, Jorge Luis Borges, Jovellanos, or Santiago Rusiñol among others spent some periods of time in Valldemossa.

Near there you can also find Deià, another essential town in your holidays in Mallorca. This village has it all: picturesque houses, sea, mountain… basic to keep on enjoying the rocky areas of the Sierra de Tramuntana. You can’t miss the sunset at Na Foradada viewpoint, located between Cala Deià and Caló de s’Estaca.

Nevertheless, if what you really want is to visit a fishing village with typical boats from Mallorca, called llaüts, you need to visit Cala Figuera, in the south of the island. Certainly, a little town in a totally amazing natural environment that calls your attention because it is divided into two entrances creating a “Y.” At one of its arms we find Caló d’en Busques, where the fishing village is; and at the other one, Caló d’en Boira, where the Torrent des Homs flows. Due to the lack of beaches, its main attraction is the port, where you will be able to see the traditional white-stone houses and boats that are still used by fishermen, and take pictures of them. From this port, thanks to its fantastic location, the famous Santanyi stones were sent in 1306 to build the Cathedral of Palma.

Did you know that there is a total of 171 boats in the Balearic Islands meant for professional fishing?

If one day you fancy going a little bit further to discover other coves, you can’t miss Porto Cristo, located in the east of Mallorca. This area is visited because of the several natural underground caves that can be found there. The Cuevas del Drach, 25 meters below the surface, are a group of underground caves more than 1.700 meters long that has one of the biggest underground lakes in the world. The Cuevas dels Hams, smaller but amazing too, have two small lakes inside. Both caves are open to the public during the whole year (it is necessary to buy a ticket).

Making the most of the day in Porto Cristo, you can also visit Cala Petita, an incredible virgin sandy cove. The Torre dels Falcons is also an interesting place to visit, built in the 16th century as a watchtower. It is worthwhile because of the excellent views to the bay, the lighthouse, and the nearest towns.

Don’t forget to take your camera, you will see amazing images during your holidays!
