Majorcan gastronomy in Autumn
Mallorca comes alive in the months of autumn, the landscape becomes richer and smells stronger, better, different. During this season, a great part of the spring work bears fruit in the form of fruits and vegetables that fill the tables and restaurants adding a touch of tradition and know-how.
At the same time, autumn rains allow amateurs and experts to look in the Sierra de Tramuntana for the best places to pick the tastiest mushrooms: rosellons, girgoles or esclatasangs are waiting at the shelter of the mountain for the good seeker.
Likewise, autumn offers us rich traditional gastronomy as the result of the pride and know-how of a town. Delicacies and dishes as selected as “arròs brut”, “tarta de champiñones”, “pescado con pimientos” and accompaniments such as “codonyat”, among others.
In this short overview, we want to offer you some of the most important products that are used in most dishes. In the Majorcan autumn, sweet potato is very typical: a sort of sweet potato that is cooked, low heat, and in traditional wood ovens. We can find two types of sweet potato: red or white; the first ones are characterized by being even sweeter and creamier, while white ones are like a long potato with a sweet touch. The best is that these sweet potatoes have less calories and glycemic index than even potato itself, a delicacy that is recommended in the most restrictive diets.
Another delicacy that we cannot miss during autumn in Mallorca is chestnut stands, with chestnuts cooked on an open fire than then melt in your mouth. If you want to give your dessert a different touch or if you simply want to eat a healthy snack, there is nothing better than chestnuts. Chestnut is one of the traditional nuts from the east, as well as from the Balearic Islands. It is a typical nut from these months that takes the island to wintertime. It is a tradition to go around the old town in Palma and villages enjoying chestnuts that provide us with energy and heat to have an endearing walk while waiting for winter.
Autumn also opens the way for the best Majorcan rice: “arròs brut”. A rice soup that cannot be eaten during summer months because of its high temperatures. It is made with the best from autumn: mushrooms like the typical “picornells”, varieties of meats, and vegetables. Without any doubt, you cannot leave the island without tasting this delicacy. Another gastronomic option offered by Majorcan autumn is barbecue of Majorcan “butifarra” and “sobrassada”.
The night is getting cooler and that means that we can make our typical barbecues with wood and our favorite cold meats. If you have already tried “sobrassada”, the next step is roasted “sobrassada”, with such a unique and juicy flavor that you will have to repeat.
And regarding fruit, what does Mallorca suggest? Pomegranate, certainly. A round fruit that hides a blood-red color and is made of sweet edible seeds; without any doubt, the preferred fruit by children, as well as by gourmands. The only fact of opening them is already exciting and fun; its touch, its sweet fruity flavor, and its singularity reign the autumn season.
But attention, this does not finish here: during autumn we find the first buds of clementines, a kind of small orange, very sweet and unique. The elderly say that these first buds have curative and purifying properties. But still, the list of typical autumn varieties in Mallorca is long: figs, apples, or grapes, among others, will fill markets and tables this season.
